Westwood Softball defeats Medway 11-10 in 9 Innings, improves to 6 and 0 on season!

The Westwood Wolverines are rolling through the 2023-2024 season and captured their 6th straight win on Wednesday Night, defeating Medway on the road 11 to 10 in a 9 inning affair.

Medway led the game 6 to 3 heading into the 6th inning. The Westwood bats exploded in the 6th and they tallied 5 runs in the inning to take a 8 to 6 lead (Bella Gentile, Mia Poles, Sasha Marino had RBI hits, Amelia O’ Neill, Bella Gentile, Dahlia Leyden, Julia Tartufo and Mia Poles plated the 5 runs in the inning for Westwood). Medway struck back in the bottom of the 6th inning as they tallied 3 runs off of a hit by Priya Bedard which led to a series of errors to give Medway a 9 to 8 lead heading into the top of the 7th.

Westwood was down to their final out in the Top of the 7th and had a runner on 2nd when Dahlia Leyden (SR) came up to the plate and hit a line drive to right field. The hit scored Amelia O’Neill (JR) and tied the game at 9-9.

After a scoreless 8th inning, Westwood would strike again in the Top of the 9th. With 2 outs in the inning, Pitcher, Bridget Mulkeen slapped a hard single to Left Field that scored Dahlia Leyden (SR) and made it a 10-9 game. Mia Poles then drew a walk and Sasha Marino (JR) followed up with a hard ground-ball single to right field which scored Mulkeen and made it an 11-9 lead. Abby Johnson (SO) grounded out to wrap up the inning.

The Bottom of the 9th started off not-so-hot for Westwood, Allyson Fagan (SO) reached on an error to start off the inning for Medway. Olivia Klaus (JR) then hit a single to give Medway two runners on base with no outs. Audrey Durgin (JR) followed up with a sacrifice ground out to advance both runners into scoring position, Gracie Delucia (SO) then struck out bringing Medway down to their final out. Ava Fahey (SR) was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Abigail Ratcliffe (SO) than drew a walk to score a run and make it an 11-10 game. With the pressure on, Westwood pitcher Bridget Mulkeen was able to strike out Nina Parcella (SR) to end the game and secure the 11 to 10 victory for the Westwood Wolverines and keep Westwood undefeated at 6 and 0 on the season, Medway fell to 3 and 3 overall.

Bridget Mulkeen (JR) pitched all 9 innings for Westwood and earned the complete-game Win. Mulkeen gave up 7 hits, 10 runs (only 1 earned run) and struck out 13 hitters in the very impressive extra-innings performance. Mulkeen also went 2-6 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Sasha Marino (JR) went 4-6 at the plate, scored a run and drove in 2 RBI’s. Amelia O’Neil (JR) went 3 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI’s and scored 3 runs. Dahlia Leyden (SR) also chipped in heavily at the plate going 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored 3 runs.

Westwood stands 6 and 0 through the first 6 games of the 2023-2024 season. Junior Pitcher, Bridget Mulkeen started 5 of the games and finished all 6 games in the pitchers circle with a win to her credit. Bridget is one of the top in the TVL with a 2.39 ERA and has struck out 65 of the 188 (35%) batters she has faced. Amelia O’ Neil (JR) has led the way with the bat through the first six games with a .550 batting average, 10 runs, 9 RBI’s and a HR. Sasha Marino (JR) has also been a key offensive weapon hitting a .538 on the season with 9 runs, 11 RBI’s and 3 doubles. Abby Johnson (SO) has also heavily emerged in the Westwood lineup hitting a .409 with 8 runs scored and 11 RBI’s. Westwood is hitting a very-impressive .364 as a team and will be a group to look out for throughout the rest of the season!
