-Baseball: Norwood defeats Westwood 5 to 4, hands Wolverines first loss of season
Norwood stated off the game red hot plating 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 1st and 2 runners on, Ryan Grenham singled to drive in Sam Larkee, Kevin Roach followed up with another single to score James Galvin. Norwood led 2-0 into the 2nd inning. Norwood struck again in the Bottom of the 2nd, with 2 outs, Jonah Flynn scored on an error by the Westwood Shortstop Brendan Cengic in the same play that ended up being a double play to end the inning. Norwood led 3-0 into the 3rd inning.
During the top of the 3rd Westwood struck back with 2 outs, Brendan Cengic singled to score Chase Warren. It remained a 3-1 game heading to the bottom of the 4th. In the Bottom of the 4th Norwood added to their 3-1 lead, Mike Grenham hit a sacrifice flyout to score Jonah Flynn. Caden Sheehan followed up with a single to score Jayden Bautista and give Norwood the 5-1 lead.
The 5-1 Norwood lead held until the top of the 7th but the Wolverines would rally and threaten a big comeback. After 2 quick outs, Westwood rallied, Jon Bertone reached on an error, Brendan Cengic singled, Teddy McGowan singled to drive in Bertone and make it 5-2. Ryan Petres followed up with a double to drive in Brendan Cengic & Teddy McGowan and make it a 1-run game. Matty Donovan pinch hit for Patrick Hunt and went down swinging on 3 straight strikes and Ryan Grenham held on to earn the 5 to 4 win and save for Norwood!
For Norwood, Dillon Begley pitched 4 innings giving up 2 hits & 1 earned run striking out 3 hitters, Ryan Grenham pitched 3 innings giving up 5 hits and 3 runs striking out 2 hitters including the game winning strikeout. Sam Larkee went 0-2 at the plate with a walk and scored a run, Mike Grenham went 0 for 3 with an RBI, Caden Sheehan went 1 for 1 with an RBI and 2 BB, Dillon Begley went 0 for 1 with 2 BB, Ryan Grenham went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Kevin Roach went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Brody Johnson went 2 for 3, Jayden Bautista went 1 for 2 with a run.
For Westwood, Ryan Petres pitched 2 innings giving up 3 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), Brian Sullivan pitched 4 innings giving up 3 hits, 2 runs (2 earned). Brendan Cengic went 3 for 4 with a Run and RBI, Teddy McGowan went 1 for 4 with a run & RBI, Ryan Petres went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and a BB.
Norwood improves to 4 and 2, Westwood falls to 5 and 1. Norwood earned their first win vs Westwood since May 12th 2023 snapping their 4-game losing streak vs the Wolverines.
Norwood next hosts Braintree on Wednesday, April 22nd at Noon, Westwood is next at Braintree on Friday, April 17th at 5pm!
