Medway Girls Basketball Wins D2 Central Sectional Championship

On Saturday (3/7), the Medway Girls Basketball team took down Marlborugh 44 to 37 in the D2 Central Sectional Championship.

The Lady Mustangs outscored Marlborough in the 1st quarter 14 to 5. Sophomore, Amy Johnston netted 8 points for the Mustangs in the 1st quarter while Senior, Mary Gould contributed 4.

In the 2nd quarter, Marlborough struck back and outscored Medway 19 to 10 in the quarter. Marlborough Sophomore, Leanne Wydom led the Panthers on an 8 to 2 run to start the quarter. It was a 24-24 game at the half. At the break, Amy Johnston (SO), Lauren Beach (JR) and Mary Gould (SR) each had 8 points for the Mustangs while Leanne Wydom had 13 for Marlborough. All of Wydom’s points were during the 2nd quarter.

The 3rd quarter was a back and forth battle dominated by defense. Margaret Regan (JR) put a layup off the glass to give Medway a 34-33 lead heading into the 4th. During the 3rd quarter Julia Dowling (SR) knocked down a pair of 3’s for Medway while Lucy Cappadona (SR) stuck for 7 Marlborough points in the frame.

Marlborough struggled offensively in the 4th quarter only netting 4 points. Lauren Beach (JR) took advantage of Marlborough foul trouble going 4 for 5 at the line during the 4th. Margaret Regan (JR) also knocked down 6 points in the quarter including an and-1. Medway outscored Marlborough 10 to 4 in the quarter and took the game 44 to 37.

The Medway Lady Mustangs claimed their 1st Sectional title since 1994 and advances on to the states where they will battle West Champion, Taconic (21-2). Medway improves to 21 and 2 overall on the season. The State Semi-Finals matchup will take place at Western New England College in Springfield on Wednesday March 11th at 5:30pm.
